Fatima Szena was just 8 years old when she was abducted from her home in Kosovo. Her captor, Djuric, the infamous Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leader, began sexually abusing her. He told her not to scream or make a sound and would beat her if she did. He promised to take her to America and make her rich. He kept her locked in a room and forced her to watch pornographic movies.
In 1997, the 17-year-old girl escaped from Djuric and fled the country. She left everything behind - her family, friends, education and the hope for a bright future.
Fatima fled with nothing but the clothes on her back and the hope to reach America and start a new life. She went to an American adoption center and waited for a forever home. The center sent her to the United States with her seven-year-old brother. She was greeted by a family and she began a new life, free of the abuse.
The U.S. government helped Fatima get a visa to enter the country and then protected her for years after. But for the past six years, Fatima has been without her brothers and unable to speak English. As time went on, the abuse continued. Fatima's story was featured in a New York Times article, along with countless other stories, in 2015. She had been struggling with an eating disorder since she was 11 years old. Now 17, she hopes to change the lives of others who are in similar circumstances.
She is the daughter of Radmila and Gorda.
